General Description
"The Central Arlington Heights West Historic District is located in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. One- and two-story, primarily single--Éfamily residences run along Bronson Avenue, 12th Avenue, and Norton Avenue, between Venice and Washington Boulevards, just east of Crenshaw Boulevard. The district follows the pattern of typical early 20th century streetcar suburbanization with its uniform blocks of rectilinear parcels laid out in a square grid, though it differentiates itself from other suburbs from this time period because of its uniquely wide streets. The grid is obstructed around Mt. Vernon Junior High School and Arlington Heights Elementary School, which lie just outside of the district. Consistent, deep setbacks contribute to the parkway-like feeling on Bronson Avenue. Consistently-spaced Mexican fan and Canary Island date palms line the sidewalks in the district. Properties retain uniform setbacks with lawns fronted by concrete sidewalks. All properties have driveways with curb cuts leading to rear detached garages.The Craftsman style is the predominant architectural mode applied to buildings in the historic district. Most Craftsman-style residences have prominent full-width porches, clapboard or shingled exteriors, and gabled roofs with overhanging eaves. Of the 68 total properties, 56 contribute to the district's historic significance. A handful of 1920s Period Revival-style properties (mostly Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival) are located in the district as well."
