    Significance Statement
This residence served as the headquarters for the Manley Oil Company for over 100 years. Founded in 1896, the Manley Oil Co. was a small family-owned oil business that operated wells throughout the neighborhood. This neighborhood, Temple-Beaudry, is part of the Los Angeles City Oil Field, considered to be the birthplace of Los Angeles' oil industry. In 1892, two miners, Edward Laurence Doheny and Charles A. Canfield, struck crude in this neighborhood, a strike that ushered in an oil rush that helped to fuel the city's early growth. At its peak around the turn-of-the-century, the Los Angeles City Oil Field had over 1,200 operating wells. The Manley Oil Co. operated out of this residence from its founding in 1886, and was still in operation as recently as 1992. Sanborn maps reveal that were oil pumps and tanks all along Glendale Boulevard, just north of this property, many of which were likely worked by the Manley Oil Co. It is unknown if or when the Manley Oil Co. stopped operating out of this residence; more research is needed to determine the period of significance.
