Significance Statement
The property meets the criteria for HCM designation because it reflects “the broad cultural, political, economic or social history of the nation, state, or community.” Johnie's is an excellent example of the post-World War II diner property-type that was common on major automomobile thoroughfares such as Wilshire Boulevard. The expressive, eye-catching forms of diners and coffee shops in the 1950s and 1960s targeted the generation's car-driving consumers. The Period of Significance ends in 2000, when the building ceased operations as a restaurant.
