    Significance Statement
Appears to be a rare example of an intact Batchelder tile entryway applied to a multi-family residence. This block of Witmer Street contains a small cluster of 1920s apartment buildings that appear to have similar tiled entryways. However, one example is located outside the survey area. In several other examples, the tile has been painted over. This property appears to be the only intact example remaining within this cluster. Ernest Batchelder was a renowned Southern California artist and leader of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and was best known and as a maker of art tiles. Batchelder's tilework most commonly appears in single family residences; this appears to be a rare example of a tiled entry surround in an apartment house. However, more research is needed to confirm the association with Batchelder; therefore, the evaluation could not be completed.
