    Significance Statement
Rare example of early residential development in Westlake; one of the last remaining residential properties along this stretch of Wilshire Boulevard. Originally, this was a narrow residential avenue called Orange Street. Orange Street was lined with numerous elaborate residences, some owned by early pioneers and developers. After a massive street-widening project launched in 1925 by the Major Street Plan for Los Angeles, Orange Street was widened to become an extension of Wilshire Boulevard, linking Westlake Park to downtown Los Angeles. Over the next several decades, residential structures were replaced by commercial development. Various sources identify this property as having been occupied either by silent film star Charles Chaplin, or by Chapman University founder Charles C. Chapman. However, neither of these associations could be confirmed. Due to alterations and additions, the property does not retain sufficient integrity to be eligible for listing in the National Register.
