HistoricPlacesLA allows you to search by address as well as other search criteria such as name, designation type, resource types, and context/theme.

Use MAP VIEW to search by address
Use SEARCH for all other searches

SEARCHING FOR DESIGNATED RESOURCES

Is a property designated?

Until all data are in HistoricPlacesLA.org, continue to search for designated properties in ZIMAS (http://www.zimas.lacity.org) as well as HistoricPlacesLA.

To search for Designated Resources using HistoricPlacesLA:

Using MAP VIEW

  1. Type Address in search box
  2. Select address
  3. Click on the red marker on map. If no red marker, the property is not in HistoricPlacesLA
    • The summary window will indicate if the property is designated according to the designation types listed
    • Click “view report” button in the summary window; scroll down to view the entire Resource Report including designation information
    • If the summary window says “none specified” then this resource is not designated, but was recorded through SurveyLA

Using SEARCH

If known, you can search for a resource by name. Note that some resources have more than one name

  2. Click on the name of the resource from search results (indicated by Resource Name)
  3. Scroll down to view the entire Resource Report including designation information
SEARCHING FOR PROPERTIES IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION OVERLAY ZONES

Although HPOZs are in HistoricPlacesLA, you cannot currently search for contributors and non-contributors by address. The addresses will be added at a date to be determined. In the meantime, continue to use http://www.ZIMAS.lacity.org to search for HPOZ contributors and non-contributors.

SEARCHING FOR PROPERTIES IDENTIFIED IN SURVEYLA

Is a property identified in SurveyLA or another survey as eligible for historic designation?

Use HistoricPlacesLA to search for properties recorded as eligible for historic designation through SurveyLA; ZIMAS does not include SurveyLA data:

  1. Determine which Community Plan Area (CPA) the property is in (SurveyLA surveys are completed by Community Plan Area).
  2. Determine if the SurveyLA data for this CPA has been completed and that the final data is in HistoricPlacesLA by reffering to the SurveyLA Data Map and/or table . If so then:
  3. Click on MAP VIEW
  4. Type address in search box
  5. Select address
  6. Click on marker on the map
  7. Click on “View Report”
  8. For information on the significance of the property scroll down to Resource Significance in the Resource Report
WHAT IF I DON’T FIND WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IN HISTORICPLACESLA?
  1. Check ZIMAS.lacity.org to see if the property is designated
  2. Make sure the SurveyLA data is published for the address/area you are searching by referring to the current SurveyLA Data Map and/or Table.
